EBay iPad App Allows Viewers to Buy Products Seen in TV Shows, Movies

imgres.jpeg EBay's iPad app is now allowing users to browse products from TV shows and movies as the company pushes into the TV commerce space, in which companies have so far failed to hit a homerun, Bloomberg News reported via The Hollywood Reporter.

quotemarksright.jpgThe new commerce service works with TV guide data that enables the app to show relevant merchandise in eBay’s store. In the first version, users must tell the app which channel they are watching, but the goal is to eventually automatically sync the app with the TV, according to Bloomberg.

That would allow the app to recognize the brand of clothing and props in each scene, such as a jacket worn by a character on AMC’s Mad Men, and let users buy the item on eBay. To make this happen, easy is looking to strike partnerships with cable providers, studios and networks, Yankovich told Bloomberg.quotesmarksleft.jpg

The TV That Watches You

353_FlingoLogo.jpeg Many people surf the Web while they watch television. Soon the websites they visit could adapt in real time themselves to the shows being watched—automatically presenting information relevant to the show, or even tuning their ads in response to what you're watching.MIT Technology Review reports.

quotemarksright.jpg A new type of Internet-connected television, due out before the end of the year, has built-in software and hardware that send data about what is on-screen to an Internet server that can identify the content.

Web pages being viewed using the same Internet connection as the TV set can then tap into that information. The system can identify any content onscreen, whatever the source, whether live TV, DVDs or movie files playing from a computer.

Flingo, the San Francisco-based startup that developed the technology, known as Sync Apps, says the new set is already being mass-produced by one of the top five television brands in the U.S. and will retail for less than $500.quotesmarksleft.jpg

SnappyTV wins best social TV idea

SnappyTViPhoneApp.jpg Out of 10 companies that pitched the crowd at the Social TV Summit — with just two-minute demos — SnappyTV won the award for the best social TV idea. Lost Remote explains why.

quotemarksright.jpgWhile people love to share their reactions while watching live TV, “what’s missing from that conversation is the video,” explains CEO Mike Folgner.

Typically, video clips show up on the web well after the broadcast, which offers “very little benefit for the content ecosystem,” he says. So SnappyTV allows viewers to “snap” and share short video highlights from TV nearly instantaneously, capitalizing on the immediate social conversation. On Twitter, you share a link. On Facebook, you’ll share an embedded video player of the clip.quotesmarksleft.jpg

Shazam to move into TV show tagging

4514.jpeg Shazam’s plans on expanding beyond its original music focus to TV show and advertisement tagging. PSFK reports.

quotemarksright.jpgShazam’s approach to these two separate entertainment markets is slightly different. For music, the company built its own database of songs – currently 11 million strong – to enable users of its app to identify tracks playing in the real world, and then buy them or access related content.

For TV, the company is not currently trying to build a comparable database of all shows, choosing instead to work with US television firms on a more cherry-picking basis. The app works in the same way: when a supported show is being watched, the viewer can tag it using Shazam’s app – not to find out what it is, but to access more content related to it.quotesmarksleft.jpg

Shazam like IntoNow app recognizes TV shows

id406436404.png Hoping to capitalize on television’s central role in TV chit chat, Yahoo said on Monday that it bought IntoNow, a mobile phone app that lets users tell friends what they are watching and discuss it. Bits reports.

quotemarksright.jpgWhat sets IntoNow apart is its ability to automatically recognize shows. Users let the app listen to a show for a few seconds, and, in theory, it will determine the name of the program and the episode. Much like Shazam does for music.

IntoNow has a vast database of shows over the last five years – the equivalent of 266 years of programming. The app can also detect new programs on 130 channels.

After the app recognizes “Desperate Housewives,” for instance, users can then share that information without having to type it in on their mobile phones. The same goes for news programs like CNN.quotesmarksleft.jpg

TW Cable Fights Back, Adds New Channels To Ipad App

Why Entertainment Will Drive the Next Checkin Craze

An interesting read from Mashable on the check in concept, popularized by Foursquare, connected to media and entertainment, as opposed to location.

quotemarksright.jpg Philo, Miso and GetGlue all have mobile and web applications explicitly designed to support and enhance that very natural entertainment-driven social behavior. They’re all using the checkin model so that app users can check-in to content, though each has its own slightly unique approach.

Philo is hyper-focused on live television. Viewers use the iPhone app or web to check-in to the live content they’re watching. Philo pulls TV listings directly from cable providers, so viewers can even see the content that’s trending locally and pinpoint where to watch it. App users earn show-specific awards based on their behaviors and work their way up a Hollywood-style ladder to earn “Director” and “Executive Producer” “credits” for shows.

Miso is also about creating a social television watching experience. The alpha service currently has iPhone, iPad and web apps that support TV show or movie checkins. It bills itself as “Foursquare for TV” and has its own game mechanics and badges that are designed to hook viewers with the promise of unlocking additional content.

GetGlue’s iPhone app extends beyond just television content and supports checkins for books, wines, topics, celebrities and video games. Rewards come in the form of stickers earned from app activity. quotesmarksleft.jpg
