Disney Appmates toys will let kids use their Disney character toys with the iPad, like a board game

disney-cars-ipad-appmates.jpeg

Disney Appmates toys will let kids use their favorite Disney character toys with the iPad the way a game piece is used on a board game. But in this case it is more interactive. The first Disney brand to get the Appmates treatment is Pixar's Cars which will go on sale in October, according to The Guardian.

How it works is pretty simple. Each toy has a unique footprint, so the iPad can tell which toy is being used. The app then delivers an interactive experience that goes with that toy.

Largest survey among file-sharers in history shows girls not interested in The Pirate Bay

cybernormer-dn.jpegThe Cybernorms research group at Sweden’s Lund University partnered with The Pirate Bay earlier this year to carry out the largest survey among file-sharers in history. 75,000 people from all over the world participated in the study, and today the researchers revealed some of the initial results. Girls don’t fancy The Pirate Bay, most pirates download movies, and they are increasingly worried about their anonymity. Also:

-- The majority of the respondents are young men between the ages of 18 and 24.

-- More than 80 percent of all respondents say they’ve downloaded movies.

In the coming weeks the researchers will delve deeper into the data and the full results are expected to be released in November. Aside from the lack of girls, some interesting patterns should emerge from the file-sharers’ brains.

The Assads versus YouTube

The Assad regime is using YouTube to track protestors, but going through large amounts of data is proving difficult. AlJazeera reports in an depth opinion piece.

quotemarksright.jpg... Aware that the government´s attention increasingly focuses on citizen communications through video and mobile technology, activists are investing time and energy in concealing their identities on videos and pictures. Syrian citizens have had time to learn from the work of Tunisians, Egyptians and other activists on the region and they have developed quite efficient ways to protect their identities, which can be seen in the increasing number of videos that are recorded from behind the crowd to avoid showing people´s faces. According to Syrian activist Alexander Page, “If a face is clear it must be blurred. We have a video center, which is basically a team outside the country we send the video to, who clean up any possible threats, upload it to Youtube and then send us the link for us to share.”quotesmarksleft.jpg

Netflix spins DVD rentals into new business dubbed ‘Qwikster’

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings in a letter to subscribers on Monday stated that Netflix will no longer operate the DVD rental-by-mail service that carried it to the top of the home entertainment industry. Instead, Netflix will be a streaming-only service while the DVD rental business is spun off and rebranded Qwikster. BGR reports.

quotemarksright.jpgI messed up. I owe you an explanation,” Hastings’ letter to Netflix customers begins. “It is clear from the feedback over the past two months that many members felt we lacked respect and humility in the way we announced the separation of DVD and streaming and the price changes. That was certainly not our intent, and I offer my sincere apology.quotesmarksleft.jpg

Google and co must take on pirate sites

UK Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt will tell a television industry gathering that he wants internet service providers and search engines - by which of course he means Google - to play a far bigger role in combating piracy. The BBC reports.

quotemarksright.jpgHe'll float a number of ideas including:

-- A body modelled on the Internet Watch Foundation, charged with identifying copyright infringing sites against which action could be taken.

-- Asking ISPs and search engines to make it harder to access such sites once a court has decided they contain unlawful content.

-- Making advertisers responsible for removing adverts from these sites.

-- Asking banks and credit card services to stop offering their services to the sites.

In other words, the government wants to make piracy sites harder to find and harder to make pay - and it believes internet giants, from Google to BT, have a responsibility to play their part.quotesmarksleft.jpg

Student facing extradition to US over TV website can resume studies

tvshacknet.jpeg A British student who faces prosecution in the United States for criminal copyright infringement has been allowed to resume his studies while he battles extradition. The Telegraph reports.

quotemarksright.jpgRichard O’Dwyer, 23, from Chesterfield, was bailed today at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on new conditions that allow him to live in his student digs in Sheffield and begin his third year of a computer science degree next week.

The case concerns TVShack, a popular website Mr O’Dwyer ran until November last year. It offered links to other websites that carried unlicensed streams of televisions shows and films that visitors could watch for free.

The first round of legal arguments will be held at New Marylebone Magistrates’ Court on 3 November.

It is understood that the case may hinge on the potential precedent set when British authorities attempted to prosecute the operator of a similar website, TV-Links, for criminal copyright infringement.quotesmarksleft.jpg
