Videos of homeless beatings spike on YouTube

Videos of homeless people being beaten or forced into humiliating acts are increasingly popular online, leading some US lawmakers to seek harsher penalties for hate crimes against the poor, reports The Sydney Morning Herald.

Deeply disturbing:

quotemarksright.jpgIn July, nearly 86,000 degrading videos of homeless people were posted on YouTube --- 15,000 more than a year earlier -- according to an NCH count.

No less than 5700 of the posts -- 1400 more than in April 2008 -- showed self-proclaimed "bum fights". In these the homeless were pushed to battle each other in return for a pack of beer or a few dollars but also to the amusement of those shooting the videos or watching them.quotesmarksleft.jpg

However, TPB was back online within a few hours with a new carrier.

In a press release, parodying Winston Churchill's famous speech of 1940, the Pirate Bay team said they would keep the site running "for years if necessary".quotesmarksleft.jpg

Screenagers spend 10 hours a day in front of a screen

A study from npower says Britain's youngsters spend 10 hours a day in front of TVs, computers, phones and videogame consoles. Tech Digest reports.

quotemarksright.jpgThe survey of 3000 seven to 16 year olds reveals that four in ten kids spend most of their time in their bedroom because all their favourite gadgets are in there. And that the TV, despite facing increasing competition from computers and games consoles, is still the main source of entertainment for this age group racking up an average of 19 hours viewing time per week.

Children spend up to 49 minutes each day texting, 38 minutes surfing the net and one hour playing video games. Says Clare McDougall, education programme director from the energy firm npower: "The summer holidays are traditionally a time when you expect children to be outdoors playing with their friends. But the lure of technology has made it harder to get young people to switch off."quotesmarksleft.jpg

In the UK, university-bound students get TV Licence warning

tvl_logo.gif TV Licensing is issuing specific advice for students who plan on watching live TV online. Research by TV Licensing shows that 80 per cent of students now take a laptop to university in their first year and 40 per cent use it as their main way to watch TV. The Shuttle reports.

quotemarksright.jpgYou need a TV Licence to watch or record TV programs, irrespective of what channel you are watching, what device you are using (TV, computer, laptop, mobile phone or any other) and how you receive them (terrestrial, satellite, cable, via the Internet or any other way).

If you do not have a license you risk prosecution and a fine of up to £1,000.

That means that if you are watching or recording live broadcasts via the BBC iPlayer you need to be covered by a TV Licence. If you are only watching or downloading programmes that have already been broadcast using the iPlayer or other internet services, a licence is not required. quotesmarksleft.jpg
