Broadcasters looking to make online programming pay

22_Grissom_kontor.jpgNone.medium.jpg IHT reports that TVNorge, a commercial channel catering to a young audience in Norway, is pressing ahead with its plan for on-demand television with episodes from its series, "FC Nerds," which features a soccer boot camp that seeks to transform unfit specimens into goal-kicking stadium stars.

"TVNorge is part of a headlong rush of public and private broadcasters around the world experimenting with on-demand programming. A major sticking point of the new online offerings is that profits remain illusive.

"No one has proven that you can reliably get consumers to pay for video online," said Nate Elliott, a senior analyst with JupiterResearch. Most broadcasters are investing in the services out of a sheer terror of being left behind, he said.

Broadcasters from tiny countries like Slovakia to European heavyweights like Germany, France and Britain are offering dramas, sports and news that can be streamed or downloaded. In Spain, viewers can watch "Aída" online, while Britons can catch "CSI" episodes on the Internet a full week before they are broadcast on traditional television."
