The End for DVDs?
The steady and inevitable descent of the DVD into technological obsolescence might have been accelerated this week by Microsoft's announcement that it is partnering with Disney to offer movies and television programs through the Xbox 360 Live Marketplace. NewsFactor Network reports.
"With the DVD industry roiled in a contentious format war between the two next-gen DVD formats -- Blu-ray and HD-DVD -- the new partnership between Microsoft and Disney raises a serious question about whether it will matter which format ultimately prevails.
When it comes to the delivery of entertainment content to consumers, there is a significant possibility that broadband will simply leapfrog high-def DVDs."

Surely it will be a very long time before the majority of people have broadband speeds anywhere near capable of downloading true HD files of somewhere between 15/20Gb in size? Here in the UK, almost all providers have download limits set (even though they advertise as unlimited). I suspect HD-DVD/Blu-ray will be the only way of getting 1080p for a little while yet.
