Your DNA as iPhone Wallpaper

C/Net News reports on a French company called Helys which is creating customized iPhone wallpapers featuring DNA imprints.

To order the wallpaper, you choose a preferred hue for your genetic material and receive a mouth-swabbing kit for collecting a DNA sample. After you send some cells back, the company creates a 100 dpi image of your DNA and sends the picture along via e-mail a couple of weeks later.

New iPhone Case Reduces Cell Phone Radiation by 60%

According to a press release, a protective case for the iPhone has launched which claims to reduce cell phone radiation by 60%

The Pong iPhone case is the first product proven by FCC-certified laboratories to reduce cell phone radiation. The case reduces the specific absorption rate (SAR, a mobile industry standard of measurement) by 60% and reduces intense `hotspot` cell phone radiation (Electric Field Intensity) by 85%. The Pong iPhone case is immediately available for the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS, through pongresearch.com.

A BlackBerry model will be available later this year, with models for other devices to follow.

Business Drying Up for Luxury Phone Makers

After years of chasing the ultra-wealthy with exclusive devices that carry designer logos and promise craftsmanship from materials such as sapphire and stainless steel, luxury phone makers are now pulling back, reports Wired.

... In the last few years, luxury phones had turned into an attractive new business, as designer houses rushed to get a foothold in the tech sector. Prada collaborated with LG to launch two LG Prada phones in Europe and Asia. Last September, Samsung launched the M75500 Night Effect phone, which carried the Emporio Armani insignia. A month later, Motorola offered a $2,000 phone, called the Aura, which was fashioned out of stainless steel and sported a 62-carat sapphire crystal lens. And then there’s Vertu, a company that makes true luxury phones, the cheapest of which costs about $6,000.

The recession put a spoke in those plans. And it’s not just the 401Ks of middle-class Americans that have been in peril. In Russia, many newly-minted billionaires saw their fortunes slip away with falling oil prices.

Cell phone uniform policy causes stir

New U.S. Air Force guidelines regarding cell phone use in uniform are causing quite a stir between techies and traditionalists. [via Gopensacola.com]

Every branch of the military has its own set of uniform rules that govern everything from proper name tag alignment to acceptable sideburn length.

Until recently, Air Force regulations forbade members from talking on cell phones while walking in uniform. Instead, they had to stay in one place while they completed their call.

But earlier this month, an Air Force board removed that restriction. Air Force members now can walk while talking on cell phones, as long as they put down the phone to render proper salutes to passing officers.

An Air Force Web site that announced the change has become a sounding board for service members who love — or loathe — the new rule.

"I believe that it is a disgrace and dishonor to walk around on any (Department of Defense) installation while being on any kind of appliance used to communicate. It takes away from professional image and core values, especially service before self," wrote an airman from Eglin Air Force Base.

But many commenters approved of the new rule.

Former Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova presented a prototype dress to reporters that is designed to light up when the wearer's mobile telephone rings. Reuters reports via Switched.

British fashion student Georgie Davies dreamed up the knee-length short-sleeved white dress as part of a school project with mobile phone-maker Sony Ericsson to figure out ways of incorporating new technology into fashion.

Davies said the dress is designed to eventually be connected to the wearer's phone by Bluetooth wireless technology, so she can be alerted to a call even in noisiest of places.

"When you're in a pub or a bar, you can never, ever hear your phone," 20-year-old Davies told Reuters on Wednesday.

BlackBerry releasing 10 yellow phones for Selfridges' birthday

Smartphone manufacturer BlackBerry has partnered with London's Selfridges, to celebrate the department store's 100th birthday by releasing ten bright yellow BlackBerry Bolds with redesigned number keys.

The handsets will be individually numbered one to ten, and should go on sale at Selfridges in London today for £1,000 each.

Heidi Klum cell phone fashionista for LG Eelectronics

LG Electronics has partnered with Heidi Klum to promote their handsets, reports MediaPost News.

The promotion is tied to LG's Rumor2 handset, for which users can design personalized back plates. The company has enlisted Klum as its "Ambassador of Style" and is making available five back plates that she designed for the phone.

To highlight Klum's designs -- and consumers' ability to create their own designs -- LG has created a print advertising campaign that depicts Klum painted in butterflies, just like one of her back plate designs. The ad will appear in weekly magazines as well as fashion monthlies. The company has also created an online banner ad of the same image.
