White House: Itís Time to Legalize Cellphone Unlocking
The White House on Monday came out in support of a consumerís right to unlock their cellphone once they have fulfilled the terms of the contract. All ThingsD reports.
Responding to a petition on WhiteHouse.gov, the executive branch stated ďThe White House agrees with the 114,000+ of you who believe that consumers should be able to unlock their cell phones without risking criminal or other penalties.Ē
They went further, saying that the same right should also extend to other mobile devices, namely tablets.
ďAnd if you have paid for your mobile device, and arenít bound by a service agreement or other obligation, you should be able to use it on another network,Ē wrote R. David Edelman, White House senior advisor for Internet, innovation, and privacy. ďItís common sense, crucial for protecting consumer choice, and important for ensuring we continue to have the vibrant, competitive wireless market that delivers innovative products and solid service to meet consumersí needs.
