Mobile phones hit 5 billion
Mobile phone service subscriptions reached 5 billion last week, according to parts manufacturer Ericsson, with demand primarily coming from emerging economies, reports The Sydney Morning Herald.
Most demand comes from India and China, with about 800 million mobile phone users in China and about 620 million in India.
Australia has 22 million mobile phone subscriptions for a population of 22.3 million.
The milestone was reached on Thursday, according to calculations by Ericsson using industry data.
About 50 per cent of the world's mobile phones contain chip-sets and semiconductors made by ST-Ericsson.
