Ericsson shows off Twittering Tree in Barcelona
At the 2010 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Ericsson is showing how a tree can interact with human beings.
The “Twittering Tree,” on display at Hall 6 in Barcelona, senses that someone is walking by and transmits information about that movement to a processor in a nearby laptop, which then activates a number of responses.
The tree plays music, speaks, turns a light on or off, and even generates tweets (actually famous quotes) that will go live to its own Twitter account, ConnectedTree.
None of these responses are random – they are based on the activity around it. When someone moves away from it, for example, the Twittering Tree will express its “loneliness” with a particular tune and a tweet. When several visitors are competing for its attention, it will comment on how busy it is. For the tree huggers in the crowd, a special Twitter response is generated when someone touches the tree. Anyone in the world can interact with the tree by commenting on its tweets.
