Cellscope Diagnoses Diseases from Your Cell Phone
What if you could diagnose an ear infection with your cell phone? That might be possible thanks to Berkeley professor Daniel Fletcher's "Cellscope: Telemicroscopy for Disease Diagnosis", one of four winners in Intel's Inspire Empower Challenge.
Fletcher's cellscope is a mobile microscopy system that turns camera-enabled cellular phones, smartphones, handhelds and netbooks into handheld microscopes to provide a portable and inexpensive way to diagnose and monitor infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis and malaria in the developing world.
The system is capable of on-site disease diagnosis and wireless transmission of patient data to clinical centers for remote evaluation, treatment recommendations, patient management and epidemiological studies.
Fletcher is also working on applications of the technology for at-home treatment in the developed world. Patients would be able to perform health monitoring at home and send the data directly to their doctor.
