Rogue cell phone calling 911 operators

File under strange.

A cell phone has been calling 911 operators in eastern Iowa over and over again, and no one seems to be on the other end of the line. DesMoines Register reports.

"Operators at the Black Hawk County Consolidated Communications Center say they have received about 400 calls from the same disconnected cell phone over the past two days.

Officials have figured out that it is an old line that isn't currently associated with a service plan. Such phones, once charged up, can still place 911 calls under Federal Communications Commission rules set in 1994.

The cell phone can't receive calls, and officials haven't been able to track the owner or the phone. Operators still have to answer calls from the phone on the off chance someone will be on the line with an emergency."
