Magnetic Levitation Handset to Debut

ensor20070314214307012-4.jpg More on Pantech's new slimphone mentioned yesterday, with further explanations on the magnet feature which enables the model to be so slim ,9.9-millimeter-thick - and to smoothly open and close. Aparently, it's a world first.

"Magnetic levitation is seeing a new application in modern technology. In addition to bullet trains, the emerging technology will be used in the most familiar consumer gadgets of the day _ the cell phone. The Korea Times reports.

" Pantech Group Wednesday took the wraps off a magnetic levitation slider phone to be released next month. Magnetic levitation, called maglev, is a method by which an object is suspended above another object with no physical support other than magnetic fields.

"This will be the world's first cell phone based on magnetic levitation technology. The top half of the slider moves via magnetic power,'' Pantech spokesperson Yang Yu-in said.

"Thanks to magnetic forces, its users will be able to almost automatically slide open their phones and vice versa. This is an out-of-box product,'' Yang said."
