Changes of Carrying and Wearing Positions Over Time
![]()
Jan Chipchase who travels the world for Nokia, observing technology usage and trends, has picked up up on how in Tokyo, "mobile phones and music players like the iPod are increasingly making their way into the back pockets of women". His observations can be found on his blog Future Perfect.
"In both cases decorative straps, that by our reckoning are found on 60%+ of women's phones, hang out of the pocket - both making it easier to retrieve phone from said pocket and drawing attention to the surrounding female form.
... The half-in the pocket half-out style is sometimes seen amongst younger males except that the phone more likely to be carried in the front right pocket - remaining within easy reach of the dominant (right) hand - useful for processing incoming information, maintaining a visual awareness (unlike Ms. Backpocket, above), whilst simultainiously supporting the projection of personal identity.
Jan Chipchase will be co-publishing research on carrying behaviour with his colleagues Fumiko Ichikiawa and Cui Yanqing later this year."
