Locating James Kim via cell phone
As the tech community worries about the disapearance of CNET's James Kim and his family since Saturday, one blogger, Digital Madman has written an article for Digg, offering technical information on how they could be found by tracing their cell phone - hoping it will be read by someone connected with the investigation. It's a lenghty technical piece explaining how it can be done.
But basically, Mr. Kim's phone could be traced if:
1.) It's powered on (or a member of his family's phone)
2.) it's in range for a connection to a tower
3.) Use of non-directonal towers are considered. (A directional tower means the search is in a 25 degree band outward but stretching 20 miles. Not impossible but adds more search area)
I hope this information helps the search out, and Mr. Kim and family are found safe. This is provided free and clear so if someone reading this needs to send it or copy it to anyone... please do so... - Digital Madman.
