Governor Signs Law to Ban Pretexting

pretexting.jpg In the wake of the Hewlett-Packard spying scandal, a new California law will make it illegal to obtain telephone records by fraud or deceit>.

"Detectives hired by the Palo Alto-based company impersonated H-P directors and journalists to obtain telephone records as part an investigation of corporate leaks.

Legislation outlawing the practice was signed Friday by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. It takes effect Jan. 1. [via KCBS]
