Mobile phone keeps watch over cars

0carpho.jpgAn Australian innovation has transformed mobile handsets into a vehicle monitoring and alarm system, reports TVNZ.

At a basic level the Silent-i, developed by Telecom and Navman New Zealand navigation systems, acts as a car minder, sending a text if the car senses a break-in.

The Silent-i is also intelligent enough to act as a vehicle tracking device. "Let's say someone's broken into the car and they're driving it away, you'll be able to find out where it is on a map...we'll be able to tell the speed its travelling, what distance its travelling," says Telecom spokesperson Shan Ohlin.

And that not only goes for thieves, but for anyone else using the car unknowingly. "Let's say for example your teenager is driving on a restricted license. If the car is driven out of hours you'll receive a text message, if your car is driven over a predetermined speed limit, you'll receive a text message," says Ohlin.

The Silent-i mobile works anywhere where there is cell phone coverage and is due on the market next month.
