Vodafone Considers fixed-line phones

vodafonelogo.gif The WSJ reports that Vodafone, the world's largest cellphone-service provider by revenue, is considering expanding into a new area: traditional phone lines.

"... Vodafone's need to defend itself in its core European markets, where most of its major competitors already offer customers bundled packages of services that include regular landline and Internet connections as well as cellphone calling and television.

Despite its mobile subscriber base of about 180 million customers world-wide, Vodafone also is facing growing threats to its core cellphone business from new technologies that enable wireless Internet access, known as WiFi, and let phone calls be routed through the Internet."
