UI students run text messaging service

drinks.gif Two enterpising University of Iowa students are running their own text messaging business -- a service that delivers information on drink specials at Iowa City bars, reports press-citizen.com.

"Ian Jacobson and Kane Johnson have more than 300 customers, most of them fellow students, who receive text messages on their wireless phones about drink specials, food deals and admission discounts.

The service has yet to turn a profit, but the two plan to eventually have the bars pay for the advertising.

One problems though, The students have used space in the university's Bedell Entrepreneurial Learning Laboratory to develop the businesses, and university officials say that partnership will soon end. "We don't condone that specific business plan," said university spokesman Steve Parrott. "We're not going to support this."
