Radiation From Electronics Devices Fuels A Retail Niche
Investors Business Daily has an interesting article rounding up the many past and ongoing studies with regard to cell phone radiation, and singles out a N.Y.-based store called LessEMF.com, which sells products designed to protect people from electromagnetic fields -- or radiation -- given off by cell phones and electronic devices.
"DeToffol estimates there are a couple of dozen vendors of "legitimate" cell phone radiation protection products, with hundreds of online retailers of such products.
... One of his most popular products is a baseball cap (picture right) that's woven with cotton and impregnated with silver and copper. The metals act as a mirror, reflecting back radio frequencies, DeToffol says. A dress shirt serves a similar purpose (picture above left)
Other items include a phone shield that fits over a cell phone to limit radiation.
Do these products work? A 2001 study prepared for Britain's consumer watchdog agency said many cell phone radiation safety products did as they claim and substantially lowered radiation coming from a cell phone. That lowered radiation, however, came at the expense of poorer reception and sound quality."
