Police consider SMS Cronulla messages 'a crime'
According to Courrier Mail, North Cronulla Beach, in Sydney's south, has been the scene of two incidents in the past week – an attack on two lifeguards on Sunday and a brawl later in the week in which youths turned on a media crew.
But residents have complained of harassment by visiting groups of young men to the extent some locals no longer use the beach.
They have told the media that even children have been targeted.
As a result, a number of text messages began circulating among the Sutherland Shire community calling for vigilantes to target unwelcome visitors to the popular tourist beach this Sunday.
According to abc.net.au, the New South Wales police say they are looking into whether it is a crime to send text messages encouraging retaliation against the attack on the two lifeguards. The state's Police Minister, Carl Scully, says the beach is for everyone to enjoy.
"I'm disgusted by some of those remarks that have been text to a large number of people inciting racial tension, I think it's probably a crime," he said. "
