Bali expats 'alerted by SMS'

Expatriates claimed they were warned of Bali bombings via text messaging sent from Australia's travel advice system, government senators said today.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has strengthened its travel warning to Indonesia after Saturday's restaurant bombings, which killed at least 22 people, including up to four Australians.

... Australian Greens senator Bob Brown said the travel warnings system needed to be under constant review.

He said the warnings issued by DFAT in the lead-up to last weekend's bombings needed to be analysed but there was only so much governments could do. "Are we to tell people they can't travel, or indeed that Bali's economy should be withdrawn, its essential economy should be withdrawn?" Senator Brown said.

"Do you give in to terrorists? – that's the corollary question. "I think people have to read the warnings and make their own judicious decision."
