China will never be able to end mobile phone spam
China will never be able to stop mobile phone spam because sending unsolicited advertising to handset users is too profitable, Li Yan, General Manager of eMay, a Chinese mobile value-added services provider, told Interfax.
"At present, the majority of mobile phone spam in China is in the form of SMS messages that promote specific products or services.
In the first seven months of 2005, about 164.56 bln SMS messages were sent via mobile phones in China, statistics from the Ministry of Information Industry (MII) showed. Since 2004, an increasingly larger percentage of these messages have been spam.
... Li said the best that could be hoped for is better control of mobile phone spam. This control will require cooperation between telecom operators, the government, and mobile phone users.
In July of 2005, eMay and other SPs, including China Enterprise, net.cn, and Xinnet.com, formed an Anti-Spam SMS Alliance, and called on other mobile SPs to join their efforts."
