SMS appeal for rare blood type saves girl

A chain of messages by handphone, sent throughout Malaysia for donors for the rare blood type, O-negative, drew dozens of responses, reports the The Electric New Paper News.

Thanks to the donors, Yau Jia Xin, 9, underwent successful heart surgery in Penang on Monday.

The girl's mother, 40, said that one of her friends then sent out the SMS message which read: 'Urgent! Child nine years old Yau Jia Xin needs O-negative blood. Help me SMS as much as you can. God bless you. Thank you.

The message was forwarded rapidly. Almost two litres of the O-negative blood were eventually donated and surgery was performed. Jia Xin is now recovering at the intensive care unit."
