Philippine government denies 'martial law' rumors circulating by SMS

Malacanang and military officials denied a text message being circulated Friday that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo would declare martial law on June 21 and cautioned the public against believing either in the "disinformation campaign" or in "speculation", according to Inq7.net.

"(They are) part of text disinformation campaign,” Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said.

A text message, in circulation in mobile phones since Thursday, said: "Confirmed. Please pass to as many people. GMA (President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's initials] will declare martial law on or before June 21."

The text message was “obviously” part of destabilization efforts similar to the President's alleged wiretapped conversations.

Yesterday Headline News reported that a new ringtone spread across the Philippines: the allegedly wiretapped voice of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's comments on vote-rigging.

"Government officials say the recording was illegally obtained and doctored and the media has been barred from airing any part of Arroyo's comments". cf Ringtones express widespread disgust over (Ms Arroyo's) obvious poll fraud.
