China - Guarding against high tech cheating

chinesestudents.gif For two or three days every summer, millions of Chinese high-school students who aspire to have a seat in colleges and universities have to take a national matriculation test. The Shangai Daily reports.

"This year, a record 8.67 million students swarmed into tens of thousands of officially designated testing centers across the country.

Guarding against cheating has always been a big issue. In the high- tech era, traditional cribbing is being updated with more advanced means, such as mobile phones, electronic scanning machines, and still more to come. Therefore, the examination in a sense tests not only the students' credibility, but also the government's managerial expertise.

To the relief of many, the local governments across the country have taken various high-tech countermeasures, employing digital camera monitoring in classrooms, shielding of electronic signals and banning the use of mobile phones, to deter potential cheaters. And no scandal of the sort was reported in the past two days".
