411 calls on cell phones ring up $2.2b in 2004

This is interesting information from the Fresno Bee. According to The Pierz Group, a directory assistance consulting firm, 411 calls on cellular phones in the US nearly doubled to 1.7 billion in 2004 from 900 million in 2000.

"At an average of $1.25 a call, that amounts to $2.2 billion last year.

Cellular companies are reluctant to say how much they make from their directory assistance services, though Verizon Wireless spokesman Paul Lemchak called it a "pretty good business."

But Pierz said they offer the enhanced services for reasons financial and otherwise.

"They are looking at it as an opportunity to increase revenue," she said. "And when people call they are using minutes."
