Sex offenders to get electronic tags

Serial sex offenders on parole in Austrlia will be fitted with tracking devices that will alert authorities if they go near schools or childcare centres, reports The Daily Telegraph.

"The offender must wear an electronic anklet or bracelet and carry the STAR unit, which is the size of a large mobile phone."

An alarm is triggered if the offender tries to remove the bracelet and if the offender approaches an "exclusion zone" such as a school, childcare centre, or a victim's home, an electronic warning alerts them they shouldn't be there.

An SMS is also sent to the offender's parole officer".
