Woman pays dearly for insulting SMS

In the first case of its kind to come before the Durban Equality Court in South Africa, a white woman was found guilty of hate speech and unfair discrimination (over the phone and by text messaging) and ordered to pay financial damages to a black complainant. [via IOL and the BBC]

"A justice department spokesman said it was the first time one of South Africa's 220 Equality Courts had ruled on a case involving text messages.

Ms Ncusane said she received the offensive text after enquiring about a flat for rent. Ms Neo said she had been racially abused first by Ms Ncusane over the telephone.

As well as the damages, Ms Neo was ordered to write a letter of apology to Ms Ncusane."
