Beijing activist savors his role in anti-Japan march

8861230_9bcd8e6e06_o.jpg Chen He Nan, a 20-year-old college student, confirmed he had government backing for the protest, which called for a boycott of Japanese goods and fed off a longstanding antipathy toward Japan for the atrocities it committed in China before and during World War II. The Chicago Tribune reports.

"Government officials, he said, "told us that it's no problem for you to protest, but you have to guarantee the safety of Japanese goods and people."

Chen said he was in touch with organizers in other cities, where similar large protests occurred over the weekend. Chen said he used the Internet and text messaging to get the word out over three or four days. The protest practically organized itself, he said. It started with students, and then thousands more people joined."
