Barbie My Scene cellular phone

phoneMar212.jpg There's no getting away from this story which has been picked up by every major online paper since the weekend. And there's nothing really new for readers of this column, except this picture which gives a good look at one of the colourful shells of the Barbie My Scene cellular phone offered by Mattel (it's a Nokia 3587i), one of several companies creating specific products for children as young as age 8 years old.

"Some consider children to be the next big, untapped market of cellphone users, others urge caution.

While some might question why someone so young might need one, and some scientists have expressed health concerns, many young kids are asking their parents for cellphones. And increasingly, they're getting them".
