The 212 Cachet: Now Available on Cellphones

Good news for mobile New Yorkers! Cellphone stores across the city, and even in other states, sometimes have access to 212 numbers these days, reports The New York Times.

"Representatives of major wireless companies acknowledge that such numbers are occasionally available, although they would not reveal exactly how many, reports

In part because of the cachet of a 212 number, some people fight hard to obtain one, either by converting a land-line number or nabbing one of the few recycled 212 numbers that have slipped back into the wireless pool."
