The Commonwealth (Australia) should conduct a trial of mobile phone jamming equipment in prison to combat the growing threat of technology-savvy terrorists, the NSW government said today, reports The Sydney Morning Herald.

"NSW Justice Minister John Hatzistergos said the federal government needed to arm the states with the tools necessary to control the use of mobile phones in prison.

Hatzistergos said advances in technology meant mobile phones were becoming smaller and harder to detect.

He called on the federal government to conduct a controlled trial of low-powered mobile jamming equipment in maximum security prisons in NSW and Victoria".
