"Private data such as names, addresses, mobile and fixed-line telephone numbers of 24,632 clients kept by the company were found to have been taken by an outsider, NTT DoCoMo said in a statement.

NTT DoCoMo has launched in-house investigations and said the chances were high that the data had been leaked by insiders.

"We sincerely apologize," Takashi Sakamoto, executive director of NTT DoCoMo, told a news conference."
