Hunting gallops to its final tally-ho
Many centuries of rural tradition are brought to an end this week in the UK as hunting with hounds is banned. Writer Lynne O'Donnell of The Observer describes in vivid detail her rides with two hunts - and related to this column, her reporting that one of the poeple she met, gave up the chase because cell phones were giving hunters an unfair advantage over animals.
"Hunters called one another on mobile phones, an idea that is one reason Graham Floyd gave up hunting and is now a ranger on a League Against Cruel Sports deer sanctuary near Taunton. 'The animals don't have these,' he said, holding his phone. 'It's taken any fairness out of the chase.'
