Ireland. 8,000 drivers caught using a mobile

More than 8,000 local motorists have been caught in less than a year putting road users' lives at risk by using mobile phones while they drive, reports the Belfast Telegraph.

"The staggering number of detections in Northern Ireland has raised fears that motorists are ignoring new legislation introduced last February in which fines are handed out.

Police today revealed that 8,261 Northern Ireland drivers have been given £30 fixed penalty fines since the ban on the use of hand-held mobile phones while driving was introduced.

Police have said that their patrols will continue to target those who ignore the ban."
