Price of jail cell phones has gone higher

jailcell.jpg A bill that was passed in Little Rock last week by the House and is now headed on to the Senate could mean a lot of help for the Crittenden County Detention Facility.

The proposed bill would make furnishing a cell phone to a prisoner a class B felony which would make the charge punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

The bill was presented by Rep. Shirley Walters, (R) of Greenwood. Walters said that the bill was drafted as a result of the concerns of Arkansas prison officials about cell phones being used in criminal enterprises and in escape attempts.

Because the state law currently states furnishing prohibited articles a class C felony, the purpose of Walters' bill would be to add cell phones to an already established list of certain items, including weapons and drugs, that will carry the greater charge because of the threat they represent."
