India. Move against cell phone use in poll campaigns

indianwomen.gif The Election Commission has asked political parties in Jharkhand to furnish cost details of cell phone messages sent out to woo voters during the assembly poll campaign, reports Kerala.

"As per the directive, political parties and candidates have been asked to furnish the number of SMS messages sent to voters and the expenditure incurred on this during the election campaign to Commission officials," said an Election Commission source.

"If any political parties or candidates are found violating the Commission's directive, it will be considered a violation of the model code of conduct," he added.

The high cost of a telephone campaign has brought it under the Election Commission's scanner. "
