1,625 More Suspected of Exam Cheating

Police will investigate an additional 1,625 college entrance exam-takers suspected of cheating by using cell phones as they sorted out 20,703 cases of text messages containing both letters and Arabic numerals and rescanned 260,000 text messages comprising only Arabic numerals, reports The Korea Times.

The new 1,625 suspects broke down to 359 allegedly involved in the words-numerals text messages and 1,266 in text messages with Arabic numerals only.

Text messages containing the test-related words have become subject to investigation, while the 1,266 cases were detected to include three matched answers.

Police said they will expand the scope of investigation into test answers sent to mobile handsets of exam takers from personal computers. The law enforcement authority found a case last week that a head of a cram school in Chongju, North Chungchong Province, sent out answers via his PC to 10 examinees who attended his cram school.

A total of 244 examinees suspected of cheating on this year's College Scholastic Ability Test will not receive scores for the test, according to the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development.

But it is highly likely that the number of suspected cheaters to be subject to same punishment will rise as police decided to step up the investigation into the additional 1,625.
