Japan ends drive-time phoning

A total ban on the use of mobile phones while driving took effect Monday in Japan, in an effort to reduce traffic accidents, reprots Menafn.com .

"The law was implemented because of the high number of traffic deaths caused by the use of cell phones while driving: 34 deaths in 2001, 41 in 2002, and 34 in 2003.

Up until now, driving while talking on a cell phone had been punishable with a fine of up to $465, but only if police believed the phone's use caused "dangerous traffic conditions."
