Nokia to Compete in Games Market
As it searches for new revenue sources, Nokia Corp., the world's largest mobile-phone maker, is trying to carve out a role as a broker in the market for videogames, ringtones and other multimedia content for cellphones, reports the WSJ.
"Nokia, based in Espoo, Finland, is drawing up an online catalog of Nokia-approved games, ringtones, screensavers, images and videos. The company says wireless-service providers, such as Vodafone Group PLC of the United Kingdom and AT&T Wireless Services Inc. of Redmond, Wash., will be able to sell this ready-made content to consumers in exchange for a commission paid to Nokia on the sale."
"Other big service providers may prefer to maintain their own direct links with the software-developer community. Orange, a unit of France Telecom SA, recently invited 250 developers to France to write software specifically for Orange. "It means we can specify exactly what we require from an Orange point of view," said a spokesman for Orange."
