Maximum sentence for Chinese online porn merchants set at life imprisonment 

China's Supreme People's Court and Supreme People's Procuratorate have jointly issued a new judicial interpretation for criminal cases concerning the production, duplication, publication, sale and dissemination of pornographic material via the Internet, mobile communications terminals and fixed-line telephone networks, reports Interfax.

"This new interpretation will become effective September 6, 2004, according to an official statement from the Supreme People's Court."

"Individuals accused of sending 200 or more pornographic mobile short messages (SMS) or of sending 100 or more pornographic audio clips will be tried for criminal offenses, punishable by a maximum sentence of 3 years in prison.

Individuals accused of sending 10,000 or more pornographic SMS or of sending 2,500 or more pornographic audio clips will be classified as extraordinarily severe cases and will be subject to a maximum sentence of life imprisonment."
