Teen mobile phone costs an increasing crime motive
An Australian judge said that teenagers wanting the latest in mobile phone fashions could soon spur more robberies than drugs, reports The Australian and the AFP
"With the cost of new generation mobile handsets rising and young people wanting to keep up with trends, Judge David Robin said he fears the emergence of a new trend.
The judge made the comments when sentencing a 17-year-old boy who, along with other juveniles, was involved in stealing 30,000 dollars (21,000 US) in cash and goods.
The boy's lawyer said his client used part of the proceeds to buy and operate a mobile phone.
"For the first time in my experience it appears the acquiring and financing of mobile phones is the motivation for the offence," Robin said. "I'm fearful it is the start of a trend."
