Y2K-style bug in the Nextel Motorola phones

In forums around the web, dozens of Nextel customers with Motorola i710, i730, and i830 phones are reporting the inability to access GPS services since Friday, reports Phone Scoop.

"Several users report that a Y2K-style bug in the phones' software is triggered by reaching "week 0" in the schedule of GPS satellite orbits, known as the GPS "almanac".

The bug causes the phone to crash and reboot, and will happen any time this week a GPS reading is attempted, including the E-911 feature invoked automatically during a 911 emergency call.

Older iDEN phones with GPS, such as the i88 and i58, are not affected."
