Gujarat police to probe anti-Atal SMS messages

The Gujarat (india) police has launched an investigation into text messages ridiculing former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, reports rediff.com.

"On Tuesday, Keshubhai Patel, former Gujarat chief minister and staunch critic of incumbent Narendra Modi, told reporters that he was extremely upset by an 'obscene' SMS about Vajpayee doing the rounds of the state for the last two days.

Patel complained that the state government was not taking any action against the sender of these messages and that there exists a 'mini-Emergency' in Gujarat, because of which even legislators are afraid to express their opinions.

The SMS messages are absolutely in bad taste," Jaitley said, "but I am not sure if the state police can investigate them. Telecommunications is a central subject. Besides, sending messages as such is not a crime."
