City Sends Signal On Cell Phone Use

A new law aims to focus drivers attention, reports The Washington Post.

"As of July 1st, a new District law will require cell phone users in the Washington area to use a hands-free device if they talk while driving in the city. After a 31-day period during which drivers will receive warnings, violators will be given tickets and fined $100 for each offense. If drivers from other jurisdictions fail to pay their tickets, they could lose their driver's licenses

New York state has required the use of hands-free cell phones since 2001. As of April, New York had issued 269,230 tickets for improper cell phone use."
