The SMS Privacy Problem

Not in the way you think..in Australia, the govt. is worried that telecom operators are storing the SMS sent by users, even when they are deleted by the mobile user. Federal Privacy Commissioner Malcolm Crompton said telcos should make mobile phone customers fully aware that they are storing their text messages.

He said under the Privacy Act consumers had the right to ask the telcos to show them what personal information, including text messages, was being kept.

Local giant Telstra retains customers' SMS messages for up to 28 days, during which time the company can access the full text of messages sent and received by Telstra mobile phones.
