Madrid bombings strain mobile phone network

Mobile operator Telefónica Móviles has appealed to Madrid residents to limit their mobile phone calls to reduce network congestion after this morning's bomb attacks in the Spanish capital, reports The Register.

"A spokesman for Telefónica Móviles said that the worst of the network congestion had passed, but asked that people send texts rather than make calls".

In the US, recommendations to use text messaging in case of emergencies were sent out in a press release by the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association (CTIA) in May of last year, and Cingular Wireles issued specific such recommendations during hurrican season.
