Mobile Phone Companies Compete to Offer Security Services

According to South Korean daily the Digital Chosun, security services offered by mobile phone providers have been gaining popularity, following a recent spate of kidnappings of children and women.

Excerpts

"For example, LG Telecom's offers “Aladdin” mobile phone - with sales skyocketing 300 percent last month, exclusively designed for emergency purposes. The phone automatically gives the current location of up to three different subscribers by simply pressing an emergency button. Or the user can use the attached camera phone to automatically sends a photo to three other people should a crisis situation occur.

KTF has just started a sercie called “Mobile Bodyguard” - which does not require a specific phone. During an emergency the user rings the alarm bell and the phone sends text messages and automatically calls the three numbers selected as the mobile phone user's guardians.

And since last month, SK Telecom began to provide a service that indicates the location of the phone user. Once registered to this service, SK Telecom periodically sends text messages to families and friends allowing them to know where the phone user is. SK Telecom is also developing a “hot key” service which allows subscribers to immediately send text and oral messages and a map of their current location by pressing a single button".
