Germans on an SMS Manhunt

Well, sorta. German Interior Ministery has announced the start of a nationwide program where citizens can be alerted by a SMS text message when the police are conducting a manhunt, reports Mobile Commerce World. The ministry hopes that the general public will then help in solving the crime, be it hunting down the missing person or tracking the criminal on loose. The system will also support new MMS messages that can send pictures as well as text.

Here's the example of the 160 characters that could be sent out: "Bank robbery, police searching for two men in their 30s. Jeans, black jackets, fleeing in a brown BMW 5 series, Dortmund plates. Tips to 110."
