Cell phone operas and evangelism

The Rev. Billy, otherwise known as Bill Talen, performance artist, social activist founder and spiritual leader of the "Church of Stop Shopping", spreads his message across the US by conducting workshops and performing his one-man show.

He likes to perform in Disney stores or Starbuck cafés, swaying his arms and chanting things like "Stop shopping, stop shopping. We're gonna put that latte!", according to M-Live.

Relevant to this column? Rev. Billy sometimes initiates "cell phone operas," in which parishioners wander through a store, shouting into their phones about slave labor on coffee plantations and other corporate evils.
